The scenery around Landmannalaugar is undoubtedly spectacular – the campsite, on the other hand, is an utter disgrace and does this unique place absolutely no justice. Never again!
The so-called ‘toilets’ are so filthy and primitive that one has to seriously wonder how such a thing can be tolerated at one of Iceland’s most visited destinations. Although the term ‘sanitary facilities’ is actually a bit of an overstatement: it’s basically a draughty wooden shed, with the wind whistling through it, where apparently everything is meant to happen at the same time.
One room for everything: one person is doing their business whilst, right next to them, someone else is brushing their teeth and another is washing up. Privacy, hygiene and a sensible separation of areas? Not a chance. The capacity is also completely inadequate for the huge number of visitors.
And as if the state of the site weren’t disappointing enough, on top of the camping fee – which is due anyway – there’s an additional car park charge. For what’s on offer, this is simply incomprehensible.
Then there’s a communal tent, which has clearly seen better days too. It’s run-down and just as unheated as the toilet block. Given the temperatures and wind typical of this region, it’s anything but a cosy lounge.
So you’re paying quite a bit here, only to be presented with facilities that, in some respects, are more reminiscent of a makeshift emergency site than a proper campsite.
The scenery: 5 stars.
The campsite: 0 stars – if that were possible.
Anyone coming to Landmannalaugar for the scenery should definitely do so. However, I wouldn’t stay here again.
Stunning nature – but this campsite: never again.
